The first year gives you a foundational knowledge of classics theory, concepts, and texts, plus the opportunity to study Ancient Greek or Latin. You will also gain important analytical techniques that will be useful across a range of subjects and research tasks.

The modules you will take are:

CLA1005 or CLA1006 (30 credits)

a One Classical Languages and Texts module at the appropriate level

b At least one module from the Text and Context category

c At least one module from the Ancient Sources (Written Evidence) category

A further 30 credits from the list of Classics and Ancient History options.

Alternatively up to 30 credits can be taken from another programme, using your modularity option.

Compulsory modules

Please note, modules CLA1005 and CLA1006 run in alternate years. Students will take whichever module is running.
