Local people will hear the views of a leading expert on fuel poverty, an issue now affecting an estimated 45,000 households in Cornwall, at a free event on the Cornwall Campus, Penryn, on Thursday 4 February 2010. Hosted by the University of Exeter, the talk by Dr Brendan Boardman is entitled Fixing Fuel Poverty: Challenges and Solutions. Dr Brenda Boardman’s latest book, Fixing fuel poverty: challenges and solutions, examines why the numbers of households in fuel poverty are rising. Five million UK households are now hit by fuel poverty despite the government's legal obligation to eradicate fuel poverty by 2016. Brenda is an Emeritus Fellow at the Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute and was the former head of the Lower Carbon Futures team and a co-director of the UK Energy Research Centre. Her main research focus is on how to achieve demand reduction in energy across the UK economy, in particular the built environment, including energy efficiency and energy use in British homes, particularly by low-income households. She considers the behavioural, technical, economic, social and political aspects of the subject and her work has a strong policy emphasis. She has been a member of the DTI's Energy Advisory Panel and is widely viewed as one of the most experienced in her field. She was awarded an MBE in 1998 for her work on energy issues. Catherine Mitchell, Professor Energy Policy at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall Campus said: “Brenda’s talk is timely and relevant. Countries in Eastern and Central Europe are beginning to experience worsening fuel poverty and we fear the UK may be heading in this direction. Brenda will share her views on how this issue should be tackled at a global and local level. We look forward to welcoming people to the Tremough Campus for what promises to be a great evening for anyone interested in energy issues.” Places are free, but should be booked: Josie Turner at J.Turner@exeter.ac.uk or 01326 254229 Please note that parking at the Cornwall Campus is pay and display and is 50p for 2 hours and £1 for 4 hours.
