University of Exeter scientists from the Cornwall Campus, Penryn, will be going out on loan to schools across Cornwall for National Science and Engineering Week. From 15–19 March, the ‘Borrow a scientist’ scheme will see University of Exeter science students go out to schools across the county to share their expertise and enthusiasm. Students will be helping in applied science, biology, chemistry, engineering, geography, geology, mathematics and physics lessons. Some will be providing general support to teachers, while others will be helping students with particular projects. Requests include one for an engineer to help Liskeard Community College students build miniature Formula One style cars and a scientist to run a session on conservation. Richard Prest, Student Recruitment & Outreach Officer for the University of Exeter said: “We had a fantastic response to this scheme from schools, who were very keen to welcome our students. We also had no problem recruiting students, who are all very eager to share their enthusiasm for science with younger people. “Exeter is a top ten University with an international reputation for groundbreaking research. Projects like this are a great way for us to share some of the expertise within the University and encourage young people to consider higher education.” The schools taking part in the scheme are: Now in its 17th year, National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW) is a ten-day programme of science, engineering and technology events and activities across the UK aimed at people of all ages.
