BA Politics and Law (Joint Honours)

This programme aims to provide you with a clear understanding of political and judicial processes, and how they interact. There is a particular emphasis in this programme on the role of European law and politics and the debates around the ‘Europeanization’ of British legal and political systems.

NB: This Joint Honours programme does not provide exemption from any part of the professional qualifications as a barrister or solicitor.

Year 1 (Level 1)

• Modern Political Analysis 1 (15 credit)

• Modern Political Analysis 2 (15 credit)

• 30 credits (typically 1-2 modules) from Politics. Current list:

- British Government and Politics (15 credit)

- State of Britain, Actors and Agenda-Setting in UK Public Policy (15 credit)

- History of Political Thought: From Ancient Greece to Early Christianity (15 credit)

- History of Political Thought: From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance (15 credit)

- Globalisation of World Politics 1 (15 credit)

- Globalisation of World Politics 2 (15 credit)

• Introduction to Law (30 credit)

• Constitutional and Administrative Law (30 credit)

Year 2 (Level 2)

• 60 credits (typically 1-2 modules) from Politics. Current list:

- Modern Political Thought: From Hobbes to Wollstonecraft (15 credit)

- Modern Political Thought: From Kant to Marx (15 credit)

- Media, Public Opinion and Campaigns (15 credit)

- American Politics (15 credit)

- Introduction to Security in World Politics (15 credit)

- Introduction to Postcolonial Politics (15 credit)

- Gendering World Politics (15 credit)

- The Ethics and Politics of Humanitarian Intervention (15 credit)

• European Union Law (30 credits)

• 30 credits (typically 1-2 modules) from Law

Year 3 (Level 3)

• Politics Dissertation (30 credits)

• 30 credits (typically 1-2 modules) from Politics. Current list:

- Political Psychology of Elites and Masses (30 credit)

- Political Participation (30 credit)

- Justice, Rights and Violence (30 credit)

- Gender, Militarization and Violence (30 credit)

• 60 credits from Law
