Exeter’s University Challenge Team has been chosen

The University Challenge Team has been selected from over 400 applicants across our four campuses.

The team consists of:

  • Team Captain: Edward Mills, a French student from Streatham Campus
  • Paul Gratrex, a Natural Sciences student from Streatham Campus
  • Ghee Bowman, a History student from Streatham Campus
  • Thomas Chicken, a History student from Penryn Campus

With the reserve place going to:

  • John Williams, a History student from Streatham Campus

The team were decided through trials run in Cornwall by Falmouth & Exeter Students’ Union (FXU) and in Devon by the Students’ Guild.

FXU ran a number of trials on the Penryn and Truro Campuses, with the winner decided on the highest score of the trials.

The Guild ran its first ever University Challenge series of events to decide the winners from the Devon campuses. The final, held in the Alumni Auditorium, had a turnout of nearly 400 students and was hosted by Guild Vice-President Education Harry Reeve with, Deputy Vice Chancellor Education, Professor Tim Quine playing the role of Jeremy Paxman.

Team Captain, Edward Mills said:

“We're all big fans of University Challenge, with some of us having watched it for over 20 years, and feel that we're in a good place for the next round of auditions. Although the selection for televised rounds is very challenging, it's a real honour to have the opportunity to represent Exeter this year, and we hope we will have the chance to make the entire community proud.”

The official applications have been sent off to the television studios and the team will be doing their interviews in Bristol in January.
