Two organisations based at the Penryn Campus announced as finalists for this year’s Cornwall Sustainability Awards.

Penryn Campus businesses reach finals of Cornwall Sustainability Awards

Build Solar, an innovative spin-out company, are finalists in the category "Innovation - Tomorrow's Contribution to Sustainability" and Falmouth Exeter Plus (FX Plus), the shared service provider for Falmouth University and the University of Exeter has been shortlisted in the "Best Managed Large Business" category.

Build Solar is a spin-out company created by the solar energy team at the University of Exeter’s Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI). It was set up following many years of research into integrated solar technologies, so that the team could develop some of their innovative ideas.

Standard solar technology is limited by the area and visual impact. Build Solar want to overcome these limitations by incorporating optically integrated solar technologies within the building envelope. They aim to BUILD integrated, affordable, efficient, and attractive SOLAR technologies as part of the building’s architecture with minimal impact on the environment.

Falmouth Exeter Plus manages and delivers shared campus services and facilities in Cornwall on behalf of both universities. Their aim is to create an ecologically, economically and socially responsible environment for all students and staff, with sustainability embedded throughout the organisation and into our 2030 strategy.

FX Plus have been working in several areas of sustainability over recent years, including maximising energy efficiency, reducing waste production, embedding their green transport plan, encouraging community participation and supporting healthy employment practices.

The Cornwall Sustainability Awards, which take place on Friday 30 November in Newquay, encourage, reward, and recognise the excellent work organisations are doing to improve their own sustainability while positively growing the natural environment in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

They received a record number of applications this year, making the shortlisting a challenging job for the judges, who were blown away by the range and quality of applications.
Professor Juliet Osborne, Director of the Environment and Sustainability Institute says: “The environment and sustainability underpin much of the ethos of the Penryn Campus and we aim to lead by example, so it’s great to see everyone’s efforts being recognised in this way. I wish them all the very best of luck on the night.”
