University of Exeter climbs in influential world ranking

The University of Exeter has strengthened its position inside the top 200 universities worldwide, according to the latest influential international league table.

Exeter has been ranked 154st in the QS World University Rankings 2019, the largest and most extensive international league table, published today (June 6), a rise of four places.

This is the 15th year that QS has published its World University Rankings. They are based on six indicators including academic reputation and employer reputation, and were compiled by considering more than 4,500 universities.

In this latest ranking, Exeter’s strongest indictor was “Employer Reputation”, rising 19 places to 109th worldwide.

Professor Sir Steve Smith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter, said: “I am naturally delighted that Exeter has climbed in these rankings, reinforcing our position among the best universities in the world.

“Exeter has consistently performed extremely well in the QS rankings, demonstrating not just our excellent academic reputation through world-leading research, but also how our students benefit from our strong employer reputation.”

The rankings come as Exeter’s “Gold” rating for teaching excellence, awarded by the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessment, last year, was reconfirmed. Exeter was one of 43 Higher Education Institutions recognised as offering gold standard teaching, learning and student outcomes in the inaugural TEF assessment, published in 2017. By retaining the gold award, Exeter’s strong commitment to delivering outstanding teaching quality, a top class learning environment and outstanding outcomes for its students in terms of graduate employment has been reinforced.

The University was also ranked 12th in the Times Higher Education (THE) Golden Age University Rankings 2018, published on June 6th.

Earlier this year, both science and humanities subjects at the University of Exeter were ranked among the world’s best in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Thirteen subjects are now positioned in the world’s top 100 – with eight in the top 50.
