Both Geography and Ecology feature in the top 10, both ranked in 9th position, making them Exeter’s highest ranked subjects. Two further subjects – Public Administration (19th) and Atmospheric Science (34), also appear in the top 50.

Earth Sciences, Environmental Science and Engineering, Water Resources, Mining and Mineral Engineering, Political Sciences, Sociology and Psychology are all placed in the top 100. Twenty-one further subjects are ranked in the top 200.

In total, Exeter features in 32 of the 54 subjects listed in the latest edition of the Shanghai Rankings Global Rankings of Academic Subjects 2022.

For the new table, more than 1,800 universities across 96 countries and regions were ranked in five different fields: the natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences.

The results were determined by measuring the quantity, quality, influence and impact of research at each institution, as well as the extent of international collaboration and the number of staff recognised with awards.
