Meet you Future was a hugely popular event

Graduates meet their futures at Tremough Campus careers fair

One of the initiatives that UoE’s Employment Services and Falmouth’s Employability Service teams work together on in this important area is Cornwall’s annual graduate careers fair - Meet your Future.

Held at the Tremough Campus, which the two institutions share and jointly manage, this year’s event attracted more than 40 employers and education providers from the region and beyond.

Many of the exhibitors catered specifically for the particular interests and aspirations of students and graduates from the Tremough and Woodlane campuses, with organisations such as D&AD, BBC Radio, Ideas Tap and CScape Dance representing the creative industries; TGC Renewables and Rio Tinto representing the mining and engineering sectors; and IBM and Enterprise Rent-a-Car representing graduate consultancy and management opportunities.  There were also presentations from teaching programmes, new business start-ups, public sector organisations and charities.

“We strongly encourage all our students to start preparing for their careers from day one and continue to support them long after they have graduated,” explained UoE’s Head of Employability and Graduate Development, Paul Blackmore.  “Our commitment to employability has been recognised this year by the Association of Graduate Recruiters, which has awarded us a Blue Riband for our strategic approach to employability skills provision and career planning.  This accolade, together with awards for our graduate development work, our own branded work placements and enterprise initiatives, and the Sunday Times University of the Year award, all reflect the dedication of our staff and students as well as the productive partnerships that we forge with employers.”

“Meet your Future provides employers with access to the very best emerging graduate talent and gives students the opportunity to network with organisations that are relevant to their areas of specialism,” added Falmouth’s Director of Learning Futures (Learning and Teaching) & Centre for Pedagogic Arts-based Research, Dr Lorna Collins.  “This event also enables graduates to open up their minds to other potential career paths that they may not have considered, or provides them with the stimulus and knowledge to establish their own creative businesses.”

“I have been impressed by the calibre of companies that the Meet your Future careers fair attracts,” commented UoE third-year Geography student, Elliot Hathaway.  “It provides a fantastic opportunity to speak directly with large graduate recruiting organisations such as IBM and Teach First as well as local businesses such as Wardell Armstrong and Fugro Seacore to give you a good understanding of the opportunities that are available and the skills that employers are looking for.  I was also pleased to see that many organisations offer work experience or internships, which are really important to students who are looking to stand out from the crowd.”

“Although you wouldn’t necessarily expect arts-based students to be interested in a career in the armed forces, strong leadership skills can speak volumes,” added Major Arthur Norman-Walker who represented the Army for the first time at Meet your Future.  “We chatted to Photography students in particular who were interested in every aspect of army life from developing a career in medicine to becoming a pilot.”
