Cornish young people celebrated in inaugural award ceremony
The inaugural Excellence Awards in Cornwall take place today Thursday 22 Nov. To be hosted by the University at the Princess Pavilion, Falmouth, this evening, the awards will recognise Excellence amongst students from the South Shore Education Partnership which consists of Falmouth School, Helston Community College, Mullion School and Penryn College.
Over 60 awards will be presented to students across the southwest peninsular of Cornwall, rewarding pupils for Academic Excellence, Artistic Excellence, Sporting Excellence and Excellence in the Community.
Several hundred parents, teachers, school representatives, and VIPs including the Mayor of Penryn Cllr Gill Grant, the Mayor of Falmouth Cllr Geoffrey Evans and the Deputy Mayor of Helston Cllr Mike Thomas are due to attend the celebration. They will be joined by senior members of University staff; the event is being hosted by Professor Mark Overton Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and the compére is Bethany Partridge, Student Ambassador who is currently studying for a BA in History. Professor David Hosken Head of the Centre for Ecology and Conservation will be presenting the awards. Student Ambassadors and staff from the whole University are assisting with the organisation of the event tonight.
Professor Mark Overton explained “The Excellence Awards provides an opportunity to give public recognition to the fantastic achievements of the young people from the South West of Cornwall. As a University, we are delighted to organise this event as we believe that education is a continuous journey from pre-school to college or university.”
Ian Blenkharn, Head of Admissions, added: ‘It is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the success of learners throughout the peninsular. The University, as part of its long-standing commitment to the local community, is delighted to be hosting these, the very first awards. This is an opportunity for the Cornwall to come together and celebrate educational excellence across a wide range of fields - from outstanding academic achievement to triumphs in sport, art, music and community action.’
