Fees and FinancePaying tuition and accommodation fees Student FeesThe University will decide your tuition fee status on information you will be asked to provide. If you are living outside the European Economic Area you should, in general, expect to pay the level known as ‘international’ fees. The exact amount will be detailed on your offer letter. For further details of undergraduate and postgraduate tuition fees for international students for degree programmes commencing in October 2009 (tution fees for 2010/11 to be confirmed) please see Further Information on Fees For further information about how universities determine your fee status download the UKCOSA Guidance Note Fees and Student Support Accommodation and Living ExpensesAccommodation charges do vary according to the standard of accommodation and duration of the contract. Visit our accommodation webpage and the Tremough Campus Accommodation Offices website for further information. We suggest that single unaccompanied students should allow a minimum amount of £700 per month to cover the cost of accommodation, food and living expenses. If you are bringing your husband/wife with you, you will need to add another £170 per month. For each child you bring with you, you should budget for an extra £100 per month. For further information on living costs please see this link to the Information for International Students Guide . We recommend that you have around £300 available to cover some essential expenditure when you first arrive. For security’s sake we would suggest that you bring £100 in sterling cash and the rest as sterling traveller’s cheques, which you can exchange for cash as required. This could cover the cost of some warm clothes and, if you are in self-catering accommodation, be put towards stocking a food cupboard, buying sheets and towels and making your place homely. For further information on preparing to study in the UK download the UKCOSA Guidance Note Arriving in the UK There are also opportunities for part-time work in Penryn, Falmouth and the surrounding area. The Careers Advisory Service which is located within Student Services in the Annex can assist you in finding part-time work locally. Paying Tuition FeesTuition fees for your programme of study are given in your offer letter. All students are entitled to pay their fees in either one lump sum or in three equal instalments. Unless your offer letter states otherwise a tuitions fees deposit is not necessary to secure your place, however if you want to pay a deposit towards your fees you can do so via our online payment facility. Once the funds have cleared we will issue a receipt which you can include in your visa application. Further information about fees and how to make an advance payment is available from student finance (fees)
Regardless of the method of payment used, payment of your tuition fees must be made by the due date or Late Fee charges will be imposed. If you are arranging for the transfer of funds to the UK, you will need to act in time to ensure that you meet the University’s payment deadlines since international fund transfers can be subject to delays. Please also allow sufficient to cover the cost of any bank charges incurred which will be deducted before the amount is credited to the University. Welfare BenefitsOne of the conditions of coming to the UK as a student, or as the dependant of a student, is that you cannot claim any British government money to help you live here. On your visa/entry clearance this will be described as ‘public funds’ and you will be breaking the law if you try to claim. Working as a studentInternational students are allowed to work part-time while studying in the UK. There are some rules you need to know. Click on Working in the UK to find out more about the practical restrictions imposed on those wishing to take up employment. You can also download the latest advice from the UKCOSA Guidance Note Working in the UK during your studies. Is it easy to find a part-time job?Yes, if you are realistic about the type of work you are willing to do. Cornwall is a service-led region so there is part-time work available in shops, hotels and restaurants, etc in Penryn, Falmouth and the surrounding area. The Careers Advisory Service (located within Student Services in the Annex) can assist you in finding part-time work locally. However please think carefully about how much time you can spare from your studies. You must not risk failing the course or delaying submission of work because of your part-time job. Opening a Bank AccountIt is not possible to open a bank account before arriving in the UK and having enrolled on your academic programme. When you open an account, you may find that it can take two weeks, or longer if a bank reference is required from your home country. Therefore please ensure that you have sufficient funds in the form of travellers cheques, cash or credit cards to cover your expenses during this period. When you have registered on your programme of full-time study you are in a position to open a bank account. It is a good idea to visit the main banks and building societies in Falmouth to see which can offer you the best service and request an application form in person as you will need to complete an application form from your preferred bank in order to open a bank account. To open a bank account you will need to take several items with your application form to the bank:
