The FXU puts on a number of social events for students and there are many clubs and societies to join, covering a wide range of interests

Students' Union (FXU)

The Cornwall Campus Students’ Union (known as FXU, which stands for Falmouth and Exeter Union) is here to make sure you make the most of your time at University. Starting with Welcome Week, they’ll play a major role in your experience as a student. FXU is a joint Students’ Union supporting students of both the University of Exeter and Falmouth University; this ensures every student on campus has the support they need, regardless of their institution. As a University of Exeter student, you are also automatically a member of the University’s Students’ Guild so you can also access the facilities and services on the Streatham Campus in Exeter if you wish.

Clubs and societies

The FXU provides subsidies for student clubs and societies to help reduce the cost of getting involved. There’s an ever growing list of student clubs – if we don't currently have the club you want, you can always create your own when you’re here! See the current list of clubs and societies

Competitive sport

The rugby, football (men’s and women’s), hockey (men’s and women’s) and cricket teams are affiliated to local leagues, providing the opportunity for competitive sport. As well as playing in regular fixtures, teams meet for weekly training sessions and are always on the look out for new players. Friendly matches for these and other sports take place against local club and college sides.

Entertainment

In Cornwall there is plenty on offer socially for students on and off Campus. The FXU Welcome Week is the most exciting part of starting at University, with daytime and evening events designed to get new students interacting with each other and to find out about the local area. FXU also organise events throughout the year including a Christmas Ball, Refreshers Week (at the start of the Spring term), graduation and end of exam parties, as well as the famous 'FXU Garden Party' in the summer. For the latest updates visit the FXU website.

Student bars

The University has two student bars: the Stannary (Cornwall Campus) and the Woodlane Bar (Falmouth). The Stannary boasts the largest capacity live music venue in Cornwall and is a prime venue for large student gigs; it has attracted big names such as Pendulum, Wretch 32, Chase and Status and Annie Mac to name a few.

Falmouth itself has a vibrant and diverse nightlife. It has four clubs and lots of bars and pubs, ranging from modern wine bars, sports bars and old-fashioned pubs, all of which are very student friendly. Penryn is also an emerging night scene for students with many new and refurbished bars providing social oppourtunity. Furthermore, the city of Truro and the lively town of Newquay are also easily accessible.

Community projects

The FXU runs the Active Community Fund Project, which gives students the opportunity to get involved in local voluntary work and community projects. Recent projects included an art project with a local school; decorating the cells at the local police station; and helping out at a local outdoor pursuits centre.

Support and advice

The Cornwall Campus has an elected Student Union President, working full-time to represent the needs of all students on any issue to do with student life. Furthermore, FXU provides a confidential advice service, independent of the university to advise on issues such as finance, housing, legal and academic issues. Find further information about FXU advisors or to find out about other student support services available at the Cornwall Campus.

Jay Bjorkmann

Cornwall is fantastic. There’s no other way to put it.

Now, I’ve heard plenty of people comment on the rumour that ‘little happens in Cornwall’ but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

You’ve got everything you could want or need and in a lush, green countryside surrounded by the beautiful Atlantic no less. A vibrant and colourful nightlife full of quaint and charming independent pubs, bars and clubs, with everything from live folk gigs to house and dub on offer; there’s a little bit of everything for everyone. Not to mention all the outdoorsy stuff that the county is a perfect setting for: surfing, sea-swimming, kayaking, rock-climbing, coasteering, kite-surfing, wind-surfing and dozens of various sports clubs – you name it, Cornwall’s got it. Sure, it’s not the heaving metropolis that London is but, if anything, that’s a bonus. It’s all about feeling at home here.

FXU offers many sports and societies ranging from hockey and rugby to Bee Soc and Capoeira.

I can say that FXU helps offer students a great life, and the opportunities you'll find here can help set you up with a career for life.
