A University of Exeter researcher has been named as one of the Women’s Engineering Society’s Top 50 Women in Engineering: Sustainability.

Dr Mi Tian, lecturer in low-carbon engineering, studies areas including hydrogen energy, sustainable fabrication of nanoporous composites, and neutron scattering characterisation techniques.

The Women’s Engineering Society (WES) Top 50 Women in Engineering: Sustainability awards, now in their fifth year, celebrate women who have made a “significant contribution within sustainability”.

“It was such an honour to be selected as one of the WES Top 50 Women in Engineering: Sustainability,” said Dr Tian, of Exeter’s Engineering department and the Global Systems Institute.

“I am absolutely thrilled about this achievement, especially during this unprecedented time.

“I have looked up to the winners of previous years as my role models and for me to join them on the list is a dream come true.

“I’m fortunate that I am supported by my family and the university, and surrounded by the experts including top women scientists at the early stage of my career.”

Professor David Butler, head of Engineering at the University of Exeter said: “We are immensely proud of Mi and her achievements, and want to congratulate her on being honoured in this way. We are particularly pleased to be able to showcase Mi as a shining example of our women engineers and the fabulous work they are doing in the area of sustainability.”

Sally Sudworth, head judge and WES Honorary Secretary, said: “The panel of judges was thrilled by with the outstanding achievements demonstrated by all of the winners and were thrilled by the difference being made by the candidates.”

The awards are an annual celebration aligned with the campaign International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) which takes place on 23 June and is also co-ordinated by WES.

The 2020 winners are published on the INWED website and celebrated during WES’ own virtual INWED event on 23 June and across social media and press throughout the world. A full list of the WE50 winners is available at www.inwed.org.uk/we50/2020winners.
