Interdisciplinary approaches guide responsible mining in emerging economies

The demand for social accountability in industry has never been greater. Leading financial institutions now recognise that the development projects they fund carry hefty environmental and social risks. This holds particularly true for large industrial projects in emerging economies where domestic laws, regulations, permits and oversight may be lacking. Focusing on mining in developing countries, this presentation explores emerging trends within lending institutions’ risk management frameworks and how these affect the work of international practitioners, in particular within environmental and social impact assessment. These frameworks are evolving in content, gradually integrating interdisciplinary areas such as ecosystem services, climate change, gender and human rights. In this context, this presentation concludes by exploring collaboration opportunities between Wardell Armstrong and the ESI's interdisciplinary team of researchers.
