I started a PhD in 2013 with Gabriel Yvon-Durocher looking at the ability of phytoplankton to adapt to warming and the impact of adaptation on the aquatic carbon cycle. We found that phytoplankton can adapt to warming and that adaptation may reduce the predicted positive feedback between photosynthesis, respiration and warming. During my PhD, I coupled empirical measurements with theory and my research helped extend the metabolic theory of ecology to demonstrate the importance of indirect effects of temperature on metabolism.


I have now moved onto even smaller organisms, studying the community and evolutionary ecology of bacteria, to try and understand how communities change when ecological and evolutionary interactions occur on the same timescales.


Throughout the PhD I used R extensively and became interested in reproducible research. I recently published the analyses of our latest paper on GitHub and regularly use tools such as RMarkdown to improve understanding and reproducibility of my analyses with collaborators and other scientists.
