University’s Business and Finance Society (BFS)

Alumni mentor the business leaders of tomorrow

Student members of the University’s Business and Finance Society (BFS) once again had the chance to gain careers advice from Exeter graduates working in a variety of industries at their annual alumni dinner.

This event, at Reed Hall on Streatham Campus, sees students apply for places stating the employment areas which they are most interested in once they graduate. Alumni volunteers from each area then host a table on the evening, giving invaluable advice over dinner to a group of aspiring business leaders.

This year the following alumni attended, listed under the sectors which they represented:

Consulting

  • Simon Standish (Economic and Social History 1975) Director, Change FX Ltd
  • Angela Boulton (MBA 2012) Technology Strategy Consultant, Accenture Strategy

Entrepreneurship

  • Ben Tyson (History 2012) Joint Managing Director, Born Social

Fast-Moving Consumer Goods

  • Chris Hodges (Business Economics 2010) Revenue Growth Manager, Coca-Cola European Partners

Human Resource Management

  • Dr Wilson Wong (PhD Psychology 2008) Head of Insight and Futures, CIPD

Investment

  • Kelly Eva (Economics and Finance 2011) Associate Investment Manager, Brewin Dolphin

Marketing

  • James Perryman (LLB 2015) Category Manager, Mars Petcare

Third Sector

  • Jonathan Smith (LLB 1981) Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Woodford Investment Management

One of the alumni who gave up their time to attend the dinner was Angela Boulton (MBA 2012) who is a member of the Business School’s alumni advisory group and now a Technology Strategy Consultant for Accenture Strategy.

Angela said: “It was inspiring to go back to Exeter as an advisor, six years after taking part in the same event as a student. Giving back is one of our core pillars in Exeter, and it was certainly moving to inspire some our future business leaders and be inspired by their determination and enthusiasm.”

The Business and Finance Society (BFS) brings together like-minded students to develop their career aspirations and offer business insight and opportunities in a social and fun way. They are one of the largest societies on campus providing networking and career events with industry leaders. The society runs events such as weekly Financial Forum and Mutual Fund meetings give attendees a real understanding of the stock market and trading experience, as well as the alumni dinner and regular social events.
