Carnwath Women in Sport Scholarships

Carnwath Women in Sport Scholarships

This year’s recipients of the Carnwath Women in Sport Scholarships are MSc by Research in Sport and Health Sciences students Chloe Bland and Jodie Koep.

The Carnwath Women in Sport Scholarships give the High Performance sport team the opportunity to offer current students the experience of working within a High Performance sporting environment alongside performance support staff and with student athletes. Previously scholarship recipients have been involved in a variety of High Performance activities including strength and conditioning, performance analysis, tracking BUCS points, fitness testing and concussion protocols for athlete welfare.

Chloe Bland commented "The Carnwath Women in Sport Scholarship gave me a fantastic opportunity to work alongside the High Performance Programme at the University. I have had hands on experience working with the Rugby Club, including the first XV, implementing baseline measures prior to concussion. With Head Injury Assessment such a crucial part of sport at the moment, it was excellent to help the Universities’ endeavour to improve the welfare of rugby players. This work, completed alongside the coaches in the Athlete Development Centre, provides a meaningful contribution to the development and wellbeing of athletes at the University."

Jodie Koep added “My time with the High Performance team has been predominantly focused on aspects of injury and concussion testing. As well as this I have also been exposed to performance analysis; filming and coding matches in order to provide feedback and support to teams. Above and beyond the skills I have developed in being a part of this programme, I have gained valuable experiences in working in an environment with top athletes and coaches, and witnessing the running of a top sporting university. This scholarship has allowed me to explore my interests in sports performance and apply my knowledge from my undergraduate degree and current master’s programme, providing me with invaluable work experience.”

Both students were awarded Carnwath Scholarships to enable them to complete this activity, made possible thanks to the support of Dame Alison Carnwath (Hon LLD, 2015). If you're interested in supporting similar activity to benefit Exeter students and our sports teams please do get in touch.
