Exeter - Queen's BuildingSpending a semester or whole year studying at Exeter through Flexible Combined Honours (FCH) lets you study across a very wide range of subject areas.

In fact, most of the subjects at Exeter area available, provided you have the necessary academic background from your own university - see below for a list of subjects.

Studying through FCH means that you take more than one subject. You cannot in fact take all your studies in one subject or department. Some departments may also limit the amount of study you can have in their area - see below.

The subjects listed are available on the campuses in the city of Exeter (Streatham / St Luke's) and some are available at the campus in Penryn, Cornwall. The Penryn subjects are marked in the list below. You cannot take subjects from Streatham/St Luke's and Penryn (the campuses are a two-hour drive apart).

Subjects available through FCH

Subjects NOT available through FCH

It is not usually possible to offer these subjects to incoming exchange students, due to capacity and academic viability:

  • Accounting
  • Drama
  • English on Streatham campus but it is available at the Penryn, Cornwall campus
  • History on Streatham campus but it is available at the Penryn, Cornwall campus
  • Law
  • Medical Sciences
  • Physics
  • Psychology, but several psychology-themed modules are available outside of the Psychology department

Course units – modules

Exeter studentsCourses at Exeter are called 'modules'. Generally these are either 15 credits (7.5 ECTS) in size, or 30 credits (15 ECTS). Most modules at Exeter are 15 credits.

15-credit modules are usually taught in one term (one semester).

30-credit modules may be taught in one term (semester), but are usually taught across both the autumn and spring terms (two semesters). Consequently, if you are at Exeter for one semester, it means you cannot take 30-credit modules, unless the module is taught only in the semester that you are here.

Some modules are taught at the university's Penryn campus in Cornwall. Please only select these modules if you are studying at Penryn during your time here. You cannot study at both the Exeter (Streatham/St. Lukes) AND Penryn campuses.

How many Modules to take?

One semester study

One-semester students must take 60 Exeter credits (30 ECTS).

You cannot take modules taught across the autumn and spring terms, as these spread over both semesters.

One year study

Full-year students must take 120 Exeter credits (60 ECTS) overall. These are taken as 60 credits (30 ECTS) per term.

Since most of our modules are either 15 credits (if they run for one term) or 30 credits (for a full year). You would therefore usually take 4 modules per term.

Subject-specific limits on what you can study

Exeter UniversitySome subject areas limit the amount of study you can have in their area. The limit for these subjects is 30 credits in a semester or 60 credits in a year:

  • Anthropology
  • Business
  • Criminology
  • Economics
  • Management
  • Philosophy
  • Sociology

Understanding module codes

The three letters at the start of each module code represent the subject area. For example:

  • ANT – Anthropology
  • PHL – Philosophy
  • POL – Politics and International Relations
  • SOC – Sociology

The initial number indicates the level of the module, for example POL1019 is a first-year module in Politics, SOC3092 is a third-year module in Sociology.

Choosing modules

Academic adviceYou indicate the modules you would like to study in your Study Plan, submitted as part of the supporting documentation with your online application.

We will do our best to allocate you to your desired modules, but note that places on modules are not guaranteed until arrival at Exeter and are subject to availability.

Please also note the following guidance concerning limitations in module space, which may make it difficult for you to take such modules:

  • Language-learning modules
  • Level 2 and level 3 Politics and International Relations modules (coded POL2XXX or POL3XXX). We suggest that students select level-one modules (coded POL1XXX)
  • Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology - Core modules are likely to have the most available space. For details of which modules are core (listed as ‘compulsory’ on these pages) see:

Please be aware that the availability and specifications of modules may be subject to change between now and the start of teaching. The timetable is not finalised until near the start of term, so it is not possible to confirm the exact timings of classes until then.

If a module you are due to take does change, or you have clashes on your timetable, don't worry! During Freshers’ Week (for September arrivals) or in the first two weeks of the January term, you are able to change your modules – speak to the FCH staff to discuss your options.
