All information on the UCAS form is taken into account to determine who merits an offer and the level of offer made.

The majority of our offers are made at the higher end of the range in recognition of the potential of the applicant but everyone is treated on an individual basis.

Contextual information and other relevant information are taken into account and that is why offers can differ. It may also mean that offers outside the usual range may be considered.

It is important that everyone is suitably qualified academically and linguistically, and a decision to make an offer and its level will be taken looking at the application as a whole and not just predicted grades or actual examinations achieved.

GCSE (or equivalent) grades are considered. Applicants are expected to have at least grade B in GCSE English and Mathematics but preference is given to A grades in these subjects.

Subject Specific entry requirements

Ancient History

No specific A-Levels required.

Animal Behaviour

GCSE Mathematics grade B if A-Level or AS-level Mathematics are not offered.

One science A-Level – Biology or Psychology are preferred.

Psychology A-Level is not required.

Anthropology

No specific A-Levels required, but it is expected that some arts/humanities or social science subjects are being taken.

Arabic

No specific A-Levels required but preference is given to applications with an A-Level language.

Archaeology

No specific A-Levels required.

Biochemistry

GCSE Mathematics.

A-Level Biology and Chemistry grade A or B, within the overall offer range.

IB HL Biology and Chemistry grade 5 or 6 within the overall offer range.

Biological Sciences: Molecular and Cellular Biology

GCSE Mathematics.

A-Level Biology grade B.

IB HL Biology grade 5.

Chemistry

GCSE Mathematics.

A-Level Chemistry plus Maths or Biology or Physics grade A or B, within the overall offer range.

IB HL Chemistry plus Maths or Biology or Physics grade 5 or 6 within the overall offer range.

Chinese

No specific A-Levels required but a GCSE or A-Level in a foreign language is desirable.

Classical Studies

No specific A-Levels required.

Classics

A-Level Latin or Greek grade B.

IB HL Latin/Greek 5.

Computer Science

A-Level Mathematics grade A or IB HL 6 Mathematics.

Economics

GCSE Mathematics grade A.

GCSE English Language grade B, but preference is given to applications with grade A.

Preference is given to applications with A-Level Mathematics grade A (or IB HL 6).

Subject combinations at A-Level/IB demonstrating both analytical and writing abilities are preferred.

No requirement for Economics to have been studied previously.

English

GCSE English Literature and/or English Language grade A, but preference will be given to applications with A*.

A-Level English Literature grade A or A-level English Language and Literature grade A.

IB HL English grade 6.

Film Studies

No specific A-Levels required.

French

  • Post A-Level or IB entry – A-Level French grade B. IB French HL 5.
  • Beginners French entry – not available as full FCH subject, but French language available as part of the overall study programme.

Geography

GCSE Mathematics.

A-Level or IB HL in humanities or social science subject (for human Geography).

A-Level or IB HL in science subject (for physical Geography).

German

  • Post A-Level or IB entry – A-Level German grade B. IB German HL 5.
  • Beginners German entry – not available as full FCH subject, but German language available as part of the overall study programme.

History

GCSE English Language grade A.

No specific A-Levels required, but most applicants have taken History to at least AS-Level.

Subject combinations at A-Level/IB demonstrating analytical writing abilities are preferred.

International Relations
(cannot be combined with Politics)

No specific A-Levels required.

Italian

  • Post A-Level or IB entry – A-Level Italian grade B. IB Italian HL 5.
  • Beginners Italian entry – A-Level or HL IB in another modern foreign language

Japanese

No specific A-Levels required but a GCSE or A-Level in a foreign language is desirable.

Law

No specific A-Levels required.

GCSE English Language grade B.

LNAT is not required.

Management

GCSE Mathematics grade B, but preference is given to students offering grade A. AS-Level or A-Level Maths may be accepted in lieu of this requirement.

Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE)

No specific A-Levels required.

GCSE Mathematics grade A.

Subject combinations at A-Level/IB demonstrating both analytical and writing abilities are preferred.

No requirement for any of the subjects to have been studied previously, but the UCAS personal statement should bring out an active interest in them.

Psychology

GCSE Mathematics B, but preference is given to applications with grade A.

GCSE English Language grade B.

One science A-Level grade A (IB HL 6) – acceptable science subjects include: Biology; Chemistry; Computing; Electronics; Engineering; Environmental Science/Studies; Geography; Geology; Mathematics; Physics; Psychology; Science; Sport and Physical Education.

Psychology A-Level is not required, but many applicants have taken Psychology to at least AS level.

Russian

  • Post A-Level or IB entry – A-Level Russian grade B. IB Russian HL 5.
  • Beginners Russian entry – A-Level grade B or IB HL 5 in another modern foreign language

Sociology

No specific A-Levels required.

Spanish (Hispanic Studies)
