First year programme - Flexible Combined Honours

  • Art in the studio Learn how to interpret works of art and architecture from the Renaissance to the present day
  • Become familiar with art historical traditions
  • Explore different media and techniques
  • Investigate a wide range of historical contexts for the production of art
  • Understand the world of art galleries and museums
  • Engage with the debates that surround the arts today
  • Find out how the status of the artist has changed over time
  • Examine the significance of new trends in the art world

Your studies concentrate on the fine arts, including painting, sculpture and architecture and, looking at more recent practices, performance, installation, photography and new media.

Exeter - Francis Towne, 1773During your first year, you develop your understanding of the ways in which the fine arts can be analysed in relation to their cultural and historical context.

Your first year also develops your analytical skills for use in subsequent years to analyse art works and develop your understanding of art history and its procedures as a means of investigating works of art.

During your second and third years you follow your interests through a wide range of optional modules, e.g.:

  • art and material culture in ancient societies
  • art historical themes and periods
  • photography
  • aspects of modernism
  • the Italian renaissance

Art in the MetTwo compulsory modules are taken during the first year:

  • Introducing Visual Culture - AHV1001 (30 credits)

or

  • Introduction to the History of Art - AHV1002 (30 credits)

and

  • Inside the Museum - AHV1005 (15 credits)

or

  • Visual Media - AHV1006 (15 credits)

and other available modules, e.g.:

  • Topics in Art History and Visual Culture I - AHV1008 (15 credits)
  • Topics in Art History and Visual Culture II - AHV1008 (15 credits)

or those in the list above not selected as the compulsory modules, to form 60 credits of this aspect of your FCH first-year studies.

More than 60 credits of art history and visually related modules can be taken each year by taking additional Art History and Visual Culture modules (provided there is space, and timetable permitting) and/or by choosing modules with a high visual content from within other subject areas of the University.
