First year programme - Flexible Combined Honours

Wall painting of Sappho, femal Greek poetThe study of Latin involves both a wonderfully flexible and expressive language and also the appreciation of some of the finest literature ever composed. The aim of this pathway is to integrate the latest approaches to ancient language and literature with the best traditional values of academic study.

Studying ancient languages offers a number of skills that are transferable to many situations in life and employment: not only the detailed awareness of the way language systems work, but also an ability to unpack the meaning of all manner of texts, from politicians' speeches to advertisers' slogans.

One compulsory module is taken in the first year:

  • Classical Language and Texts: Latin III - CLA1254 (30 credits)

At least one module is chosen from the group known as Text and Context - some examples of modules:

  • Roman Laughter - CLA1405 (15 credits)
  • Horace and Augustus - CLA1407 (15 credits)
  • Suetonius and Imperial power - CLA1408 (15 credits)

And if required, one module is chosen from the groups Ancient Sources or Ancient World:

Ancient Sources - some examples of modules:

  • Roman Historical Writing - CLA1303 (15 credits)
  • Nature and Culture - CLA1305 (15 credits)
  • Brave New Rome of Augustus - CLA1354 (15 credits)
  • Globalisation in the Roman Empire - CLA1357 (15 credits)

Ancient World - some examples of modules:

  • Roman Philosophy - CLA1508 (15 credits)
  • Roman Religion - CLA1510 (15 credits)

... the choice varies each year. The current list is under Classics and Ancient History on the College of Humanities' modules web page
