First year programme - Flexible Combined Honours

Cairo marketThere are no compulsory modules during the first year.

You choose modules from those available in the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies (IAIS):

  • Histories of the Middle East, 600-1800 C.E. - ARA1036 (15 credits)
  • Politics and Economy of the Contemporary Middle East - ARA1010 (15 credits)
  • Arabic for Beginners I - ARA1015 (30 credits)
  • Introduction to Islam - ARA1018 (15 credits)
  • Introduction to Islamic Archaeology - ARA1030 (15 credits)

Cairo street sceneand up to 30 credits of modules may be taken from other departments offering relevant modules, e.g.:

  • Introduction to Social Anthropology Part 1 - ANT10001 (15 credits)
  • Geographies of Place, Identity and Culture - GEO1105 (15 credits)
  • Globalisation of World Politics - POL1017 (15 credits)

to make a total of 60 credits in this half of the overall Flexible Combined Honours degree programme.
