First year programme - Flexible Combined Honours

ReligionsReligion is a major factor shaping the world in which we live – you can't understand the world without understanding religion.

All religions raise ethical and philosophical questions which are among the most basic and important we face as human beings.

The FCH pathway in Religion draws on a wide range of intellectual disciplines: historical studies, philosophy, sociology, cultural studies, art history ...

There are two compulsory modules during the first year:

  • Religion in the Modern World - THE1076 (15 credits)
  • Theology and Religion. Philosophy of Religion Christian Ethics - THE1106 (15 credits)

and 45 credits are chosen from level 1 options relating to Religion, e.g.:

  • Introduction to Theology - THE1051 (15 credits)
  • Introduction to Biblical Hermeneutics - THE1075 (15 credits)
  • The Gospels: Origins and Outlooks - THE1054 (15 credits)
  • Atonement and Salvation - THE1107 (15 credits)
  • Introduction to Islam - ARA1018 (15 credits)
  • Introduction to Islamic Archaeology - ARA1030 (15 credits)
  • Ancient World: Roman Religion - CLA1510 (15 credits)
  • ...there are many to choose from, and they vary each year. For example, see the Theology and Religion department's options web page or the options offered by the Arab and Islamic Studies Institute.

to make a total of 60 credits in this half of the overall Flexible Combined Honours degree programme. Religion can also be studied as more or less than 60 credits each year.

This subject pathway combines well with the ones in Anthropology or Philosophy.

FCH also ofers a subject pathway in Theology.

If you want to study both Theology and Religion, you should apply for the BA Theology and Religion degree offered by the Theology and Religion department.
