First year programme - Flexible Combined Honours

Science technology and societyThe University of Exeter is leading internationally acclaimed research in a diverse range of themes; from renewable energy, technology, conservation and sustainability development, to healthcare, culture and government.

Such interdisciplinary research makes the University extremely well-placed to educate the leaders of the future who will tackle the transnational and multidisciplinary issues that face society.

We have a wide range of first-class facilities. These include the Environment and Sustainability Institute and the Science and Engineering Research Support Facility at our Penryn Campus, and The European Centre for Environment and Human Health based at the Knowledge Spa at the Royal Cornwall Hospital on our Truro Campus.

The Science, Technology and Society programme (STS) draws on this expertise to prepare graduates for their role in a complex and increasingly dynamic workplace as we move through the 21st Century, by developing an understanding of the interconnected nature of the world in which we live.

Considerable flexibility and breadth of subject choice enables you to tailor the course to suit your interests and future career goals. There are opportunities to choose from a range of modules across the three strands of Science, Technology and Society with an on-going emphasis on links between these, i.e. interdisciplinary study.

The Cornwall campuses at Truro and Penryn provide the ideal venue to tackle such problems in a diverse but close-knit academic community via inspirational teaching and active, research-inspired, inquiry-led learning.

work abroadSubject pathways in STS

Your studies follow the theme of Science, Technology and Society and lead to a degree title of that name.

STS can form all of your studies, i.e. 120 credits each academic year.

Or, STS can form part of your studies each year, so that you can combine it with other subjects. For example:

  • STS and Business
  • STS and International Relations
  • STS and Sustainability

Another possibility is that you can give a particular themed aspect to your studies in the area of STS, e.g.:

  • International Relations and Sustainable Futures
    • Major theme = modules in international relations, international politics
    • Minor theme = modules in environmental sciences, technology
  • Ecological Sustainability
    • Major theme = modules in environmental sciences
    • Minor theme = modules in environmental governance, technology
  • Society and Global Challenges
    • Major theme = modules in social sciences/humanities
    • Minor theme = modules in science, technology
  • Environment and Humanities
    • Major theme = modules in humanities / social sciences
    • Minor theme = modules in science, technology

Note - If you would like a significant Mathematics element in your study of STS, you will need A-Level Mathematics grade B or IB HL 5 (or equivalent).
