Global warmingNowadays, most businesses and organisations are working to make their operations more sustainable in response to new legislations but also motivated by ethical principles and consumer demand. There is a need for employees and leaders with a whole new set of skills, ranging from communicating change and advocacy to environmental auditing.

Consequently it is important that all students understand and learn more about how sustainability principles apply to their own fields of study and the world in general. This can then aid employability and feed into career aspirations.

The University of Exeter is leading internationally acclaimed research in the interdisciplinary areas of

  • Climate Change and Sustainable Futures
  • Migration and Identity
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Systems Biology

This ground-breaking research provides an excellent context for you to develop aspirations to be a leader in your own field of expertise, whilst having a sound understanding of the implications of a fast-changing society that faces climate change, environmental degradation and economic and social instability.

The research leads into the sustinability-related modules you can take. These modules range from broad knowledge in the areas of politics and anthropology to more applied disciplinary knowledge such as water security and environmental law. The modules compliment any subjects in your degree programme.

Through Flexible Combined Honours you can create a Sustainability themed pathway to your degree.

The pathway can form half your credits of your studies each year, and more if sufficient modules are available; a minor pathway is also possible.

Examples of pathways

  • BA (Hons) Management for Sustainability with French – details
  • BA (Hons) International Relations and Sustainable Futures
  • BSc (Hons) Mathematics, Climate Change and Communication
  • BA (Hons) Society & Global Challenges

Your area of interest creates the combination – i.e. you design your own pathway with the help from the pathway co-ordinator.

Modules

There is one first-year compulsory module that introduces the principles of environmental, social and economical sustainability:

  • Geographies of Environment and Sustainability - GEO1310 (15 credits)

SustainabilityThis module provides you with a context to explore personal attributes as well as global mechanisms and systems that could contribute to a fairer and safer future for all within the limits of planetary resources.

The module will enable you to link these principles to your own disciplinary interest and introduce skills such as systems thinking, global awareness, scenario planning and dealing with complex problems.

You choose your other modules from those available with a Sustainability theme, relevant to your overall pathway, e.g.:

Added extras

  • Languages – Your degree can be enriched by a language (Arabic, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish). All of these can be studied from beginners so it doesn't matter what level you are at the moment.
  • Employment – The degree develops your employability with work experience as part of the degree.
  • Research – You carry out an in-depth study of a topic of your own choice in your final year.

work placementThree- or Four-year degrees

The pathway can be studied over three years or as four years with the third year being:

  • study abroad
  • work abroad
  • UK-based work experience

Degree titles

Your degree title reflects the type of Global Futures – Sustainability theme you give to your degree, e.g.

  • BA (Hons) International Relations and Sustainable Futures
  • BSc (Hons) Ecological Sustainability
  • BA (Hons) Society and Global Challenges

The title is created by yourself and the FCH Director during your studies at Exeter.
