This ground-breaking research provides an excellent context for you to develop aspirations to be a leader in your own field of expertise, whilst having a sound understanding of the implications of a fast-changing society that faces climate change, environmental degradation and economic and social instability.

Global Futires - SustainabilityThrough Flexible Combined Honours you can create a Global Futures – Sustainability themed pathway to your degree.

The pathway can form all 120 credits or part of your studies each year.

Your area of interest creates the combination – i.e. you design your own pathway with the help of an expert in the field of sustainability.

You are supported throughout by academic staff and tutorials.

Sustain:ability logoYou choose from a wide range of modules when creating your pathway and include those that have synergy with this agenda; they are badged with the SUSTAIN:ability logo. A list is available.

Global futures - sustainabilityCore module year one

Studying Sustainability is supported by a core first year module, Global Futures (FCH1000), that introduces the principles of environmental, social and economical sustainability.

Sustainable productionThis introductory module provides you with a context to explore personal attributes as well as global mechanisms and systems that could contribute to a fairer and safer future for all within the limits of planetary resources.

The module will enable you to link these principles to your own disciplinary interest and introduce skills such as systems thinking, global awareness, scenario planning and dealing with complex problems.

Added extras

  • Languages – Your degree can be enriched by a language (Arabic, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish). All of these can be studied from beginners so it doesn't matter what level you are at the moment.
  • Employment – The degree develops your employability with work experience as part of the degree.
  • Research – You carry out an in-depth study of a topic of your own choice in your final year.

The pathway can be studied over three years or as four years with the third year being:

  • study abroad
  • work abroad
  • UK-based work experience

Degree titles

Your degree title reflects the type of Global Futures – Sustainability theme you give to your degree, e.g.

  • BA (Hons) International Relations and Sustainable Futures
  • BSc (Hons) Ecological Sustainability
  • BA (Hons) Society and Global Challenges

The title is created by yourself and the FCH Director during your studies at Exeter.
