Second year programme - Flexible Combined Honours

Chinese commuters on bicylesMandarin Chinese language can be studied as a minor pathway (30 credits out of the overall 120 taken each year).

Mandarin Chinese can be started as part of your second year studies, but clearly more progress can be made if you begin in your first year.

If you took Mandarin Chinese in your first year, for your second year you take whichever is the natural follow-on:

  • Mandarin Chinese Intermediate 1 FLC2230 (30 credits) (terms 1 and 2)

or:

  • Mandarin Chinese Intermediate 2 FLC2330 (30 credits) (terms 1 and 2)

If you are adding Mandarin Chinese to your degree from your second year, you take:

  • Mandarin Chinese Beginners FLC1130 (30 credits) (terms 1 and 2)

or

  • Mandarin Chinese Beginners for Business FLC1230 details forthcoming (30 credits) (terms 1 and 2)

or if a post-beginner you take:

  • Mandarin Chinese Intermediate 1 FLC2230 (30 credits) (terms 1 and 2)

The modules are delivered by the University's Foreign Language Centre.

If 60 or more credits of Mandarin Chinese are taken during your degree, your degree title will include the phrase "with Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese".

It may be possible to add to your Chinese studies by taking related modules from departments across the University, e.g. there may be modules available in Far Eastern history, philosophy and religions. This could then be reflected in the degree title with a suitable term, e.g. "with Chinese Studies" or "with far Eastern Studies".
