Second year programme - Flexible Combined Honours

Japanese commutersJapanese language can be studied as a minor pathway (30 credits out of the overall 120 taken each year).

Japanese can be started as part of your second year studies, but clearly more progress can be made if you begin in your first year.

If you took Japanese in your first year, for your second year you take:

  • Japanese Intermediate 1 FLJ2230 (30 credits) (terms 1 and 2)

If you are starting Japanese in your second year, you take:

  • Japanese Beginners FLJ1130 (30 credits) (terms 1 and 2)

The modules are delivered by the University's Foreign Language Centre.

If 60 or more credits of Japanese are taken during your degree, your degree title will include the phrase "with Proficiency in Japanese ".

It may be possible to add to your Japanese studies by taking related modules from departments across the University, e.g. if there are modules available in Far Eastern history, philosophy and religions. This could then be reflected in the degree title with a suitable term, e.g. "with Japanese Studies" or "with far Eastern Studies".
