A pathway in Mediterranean Studies opens up many study possibilities by combining modules from several departments.

Have a flexible approach by taking modules looking at different aspects of the Mediterranean.

Or combine related modules to form one or more themes. Themes you could create for yourself include:

  • Mediterranean history - the history of Islam (Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies) could be combined with modules on the history of Judaism (Theology Department), or connections between Spain and Islam (History Department).
  • Mediterranean drama - Greek and Roman drama (Department of Classics & Ancient History) could be studied alongside Arabic drama (Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies), and the representations and reception of the ancient world in later periods (History Department).
  • Southern Mediterranean, Ancient and Modern - modules on ancient Egypt (Department of Archaeology) could set against modules on modern north Africa (Department of Politics).

Add languages

Your programme could also be enriched by a Mediterranean language, ancient or modern (Arabic, French, Italian, Latin, Greek, Spanish). Most of these can be studied from beginners so it doesn't matter what level you are at the moment.

Degree titles

The degree you create could be called BA Mediterranean Studies or could reflect a theme you have given to your programme, e.g. BA Mediterranean Politcs, Ancient and Modern or BA Mediterranean Languages and Culture.
