Second year of programme - Flexible Combined Honours

You choose modules from those available in the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies (IAIS), e.g.:

  • Society and Empire in the Modern Middle East, 1798-1914 - ARA2130 (15 credits)
  • Arabic for Beginners II - ARA2148 (30 credits)
  • Conflict and Peacemaking Palestine/Israel - ARA2135 (15 credits)
  • Making Islam Democratic: Lessons from Egypt and Iran - ARA2158 (15 credits)
  • Islamist Movements: From the Muslim Brothers to Al-Qa'ida - ARA2160 (15 credits)
  • The Historiography of the Arab-Israeli Conflict - ARA2161 (15 credits)
  • Political Economy of Development in the Middle East - ARA2162 (15 credits)
  • Jerusalem in the Arab/Israeli Conflict - ARA2163 (15 credits)

Journalism course in Saudi Arabiaand up to 30 credits of modules may be taken from other departments offerring relevant modules, e.g.:

  • Political Geographies - GEO2120 (15 credits)
  • People's History: The Middle East in Modern World History - HIH2023 (30 credits)
  • Violence and Colonial Rule in Africa and Asia, 1880-1945 - HIH2168 (30 credits)
  • An Introduction to the Archaeology of Ancient Egypt - ARC2402 (15 credits)
  • War and Peace in the Middle East - POL2038 (15 credits)

to make a total of 60 credits in this half of the overall Flexible Combined Honours degree programme.
