38. Intellectual property rights and patents

38.1. Certain activities undertaken within the institution including research and consultancy may give rise to ideas, designs and inventions, which may be patentable. These are collectively known as intellectual property.

38.2. Council is responsible for establishing procedures to deal with any patents accruing to the University from inventions and discoveries made by staff in the course of their research.

38.3. In the event of the University deciding to become involved in the commercial exploitation of inventions and research, the matter should then proceed in accordance with the intellectual property procedures as set out in the University’s Intellectual Property Policy.
