In 2005 we celebrate the University's Golden Jubilee; the 50th anniversary of the granting of our Royal Charter. I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to celebrate with us.
Since 1955, the University has grown to become a dynamic and successful institution with 12,500 students and 2,600 staff. It is in the midst of an investment programme which totals well over £100 million. Recent developments include £38 million worth of new accommodation, five new research centres representing an investment of over £20 million, and a £6 million investment in sport, including a new tennis centre with indoor and outdoor courts.
We have joined with partners in the region to bring real benefits to the South West. These include the region’s first medical school, in partnership with the University of Plymouth, and the new Tremough campus in Cornwall, in partnership with Falmouth College of Arts.
The Golden Jubilee is a celebration of the past, but it is also an opportunity to look to the future. In an increasingly competitive world we will need more friends and partners if the next 50 years are also to be a success. We hope to engage your support over the next year and to look for new ways to develop and sustain our relationships with those closest to us.
