On the day – Cornwall
Your graduation day is a special occasion to celebrate your academic achievements at the University of Exeter with your friends and family. Visit our graduation preparation page to plan and prepare for your graduation. The information listed below explains all you need to know about your graduation day.
Further information about what to expect on the day is available in Information for Graduands and Guests 2017.
All graduands will need to wear full academic dress on the day of graduation. To book your robes please see our information on booking your robes. You will need to collect your robes from the Green Seminar Room in the Exchange Building where representatives of the University's robe makers will be in attendance. You will also be required to wear smart clothes and are advised not to wear jeans or trainers. Please wear appropriate footwear for walking up and down the stage steps.
It is helpful to bring one or two safety pins to secure your hood (a buttoned shirt or blouse would enable you to hook on the hood), and women may wish to use hair-grips to secure their caps.
Guests are advised to dress as if they are going to a formal occasion.
- Plese remember to bring your printed graduand and guest tickets with you to the ceremony.
- If you do forget to bring your tickets, please come to the Graduation Information Desk on the ground floor of The Exchange building where we can print them for you if necessary.
- If you have any spare guest tickets that you are unable to use on the day, please bring them to the Information Desk at the Cathedral.
Guests without tickets
Guests who cannot purchase or do not have tickets for the ceremony can watch the event live via web streaming in the Exchange Lecture Theatre, Upper Stannary Bar and Lecture Theatre 2, Peter Lanyon.

Guests are advised to dress as if they are going to a formal occasion.
Photography during the ceremony
Photographs and videos are permitted, but we kindly ask you not to leave your seat during the ceremony. Please turn off any flash on your camera as this can be distracting for all those on stage, including graduands crossing the stage. We do have professional photographers and videographers capturing the special day.
We do not recommend that children are taken to the ceremony, due to the length and formal nature of proceedings. If your child becomes restless during the ceremony, it would be a kindness to others to take him/her from the venue as quickly and quietly as possible. Ushers will be on hand to assist if necessary. Please note that children are not permitted to cross the stage with their parents. Any child over the age of two will also require a separate guest ticket to attend.
Commemorative programmes will be on sale for £5.00 from the Information Desk at the Cathedral. All graduands receive a complementary programme during their ceremony.
Graduands and guests are asked to arrive at the Cathedral and be seated 30 minutes before each ceremony begins. Click here to check ceremony times.
Seats for guests are unreserved with the exception of those with specific requirements, who will have reserved seats (please see ‘Disabled access information’ below for further details).
During the ceremony
At the beginning and end of the ceremony, please stand for the entry and exit of the processions. We ask that you remain seated throughout the ceremony in order to not disrupt the flow of the ceremony. At the end of the ceremony please remain in the Cathedral until after the exit of the graduates' procession.
Professional photography will be available in the Photographic Studios in Peter Lanyon Building.
Our official photographers, Ede & Ravenscroft, will be in on campus on the day of your ceremony, offering a professional photography service.
