Jonathan Adams is Chief Scientist at Digital Science & Research Solutions Ltd, a Holtzbrinck Group company and sister-company to Nature Publishing Group. He is a Visiting Professor at the Policy Institute, King's College London.

Jonathan graduated from the Universities of Leicester (BSc Biological Sciences, 1975) and Liverpool (PhD Zoology, 1979), and was a researcher at King's College London and the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He started lecturing for the Workers Educational Association on Tyneside and enjoyed it so much that he moved to the University of Leeds to develop an adult education science programme across North and West Yorkshire (1983-1989). He was also Leeds' first Director of Part-time Degrees. He then became a member of the science policy staff of the UK Advisory Board for the Research Councils (1989-1992) before returning to Leeds as Director of Research Strategy.

In 2000, Jonathan and his wife co-founded Evidence Ltd, which carried out research evaluation for agencies and institutions in the UK, elsewhere in Europe, Brazil, Australia, China and India. In 2004, he chaired the European Commission Monitoring Committee for its main research Framework Programme and in 2006 he chaired the Monitoring Group of the European Research Fund for Coal & Steel. He also led the New Zealand government's 2008 review of research evaluation and was a member of the Australian Research Council groups for Excellence in Research for Australia (2009) and Impact and Engagement (2016).

Evidence was sold to Thomson Reuters in 2009 and Jonathan became their Director of Research Evaluation before moving to his current role.
