Alex Farquharson (DLitt)

Alex Farquharson is the Director of Tate Britain. He joined Tate in late 2015. Previously he was Director of Nottingham Contemporary, one of Britain's leading centres for contemporary art, which launched in 2009. His time at Nottingham has been widely praised, with the gallery attracting more than a million visitors during the first five years.

A curator of contemporary art by background, Alex was Exhibitions Director at Spacex in Exeter from 1994 to 1999 and then Head of Exhibitions at the Centre for Visual Arts in Cardiff. He has taught and lectured at many universities and art institutions, and was Visiting Lecturer and Research Fellow on the Curating Contemporary Art MA at Royal College of Art for several years. He sits on the Arts Council Collection's acquisitions committee and is a Trustee of Raven Row. His writings on art and curating have been widely published, in particular in Frieze, Artforum and Art Monthly. Alex has a BA in English and Fine Art from the University of Exeter and an MA in Arts Criticism from City University.
