Exeter to bring data science and AI expertise to The Alan Turing Institute
The University of Exeter has joined the prestigious Alan Turing Institute, it has been announced.
Exeter, alongside the University of Birmingham, are the latest universities to join a select group of university partners working with the Institute to advance the world-changing potential of data science and artificial intelligence.
The influential partnership is designed to strengthen the growing scientific and industry network for data and AI research in the UK.
Exeter has been selected to join the Turing network due its research excellence and ability to bring new expertise and opportunities to enhance the core strengths of the Institute.
It will be led by world-leading experts from the University’s new Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (IDSAI), which will develop innovative approaches to the use of data and address some of today’s most important global and societal challenges.
The IDSAI is designed to form research collaborations and strategic partnerships with industry across the globe, influence government policy in data science, AI and the digital skills agenda, and guide public engagement with social and ethical issues arising from developments in data science and AI, amongst others.
The partnership will also involve leading academics from disciplines and Colleges across the University, reflecting the widespread importance of data in academic research and society.
The inaugural Director of the ISDAI, Professor Richard Everson said: “Partnership with the Alan Turing Institute is an exciting and important element of Exeter’s research vision, to pioneer innovative data science and artificial intelligence in our scientific technological, social and cultural research, education and impact.”Sir Alan Wilson, CEO of the Alan Turing Institute commented: “In order to deliver on our ambitions to advance data science and artificial intelligence research, we need to enable the broadest possible collaboration across the sector.”
