The Information Governance Team has responsibility for implementing the Information Governance framework to ensure we maintain the Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability to University information as well as compliance with relevant legislation.

We provide policy, support, advice and guidance in the follow areas;

  • Data Protection Act and Freedom of Information – including responding to Subject Access Requests
  • General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) – ensuring we are ready for the new legislation which becomes law in May 2018
  • Privacy by Design – ensuring systems and projects that use personal data have security built from design and are legally compliant
  • Training and Awareness – providing staff with the information they need to keep information safe at work and at home
  • Information Security – working closely with IT (for technical security) to ensure the University information is secure, whatever the format it is held in
  • Records Management – regarding the creation, use, storage and disposal of records including Retention Schedules and the Modern Records Centre
  • Information Risk Management – advise all colleges and departments in managing their information risks
  • Data Breach Management – support the investigation and reporting of data security incidents/breaches

Rhiannon Platt – Information Governance Manager and Data Protection Officer

Rhiannon takes a University wide lead on all aspects of Information Governance and is the Data Protection Officer for the University of Exeter.  She is responsible for developing policy and processes to support information security (working closely with IT who lead on cyber security) and best practice and to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.

Rhiannon is the Secretary to the University Information Governance & Security Steering Group (IGSSG) chaired by the Registrar and Senior Information Risk Owner (SIRO) Mike Shore-Nye and supports the management of information risk across all departments and colleges.

Dan joined the University as an Information Governance Officer in 2017 after spending a number of years working in a data protection role within an NHS Mental Health Trust.

Dan’s focus is on compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and he is responsible for managing and processing queries and requests for information under Data Protection (Subject Access Requests, SAR), Freedom of Information (FOI) and Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) as well as providing training in these laws. Dan is also supporting the GDPR project and ensuring the University will be ready for the change in law in May 2018.

Rick graduated from the University of Aberystwyth in 2011 with an MSc Econ in Records and Information Management and was seconded to the Information Governance team in spring 2017.

Rick’s focus is on the University's records management practices including, data retention and physical file storage as well as maintaining the Modern Records Centre (MRC). Rick also has responsibility for managing and processing queries and requests under the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) and Environmental Information Regulations (EIR).
