What expenses will I need to consider?

You will need to fund a return air-fare (or two if you are away for a full academic year and you want to come home for Christmas), a visa, travel and health insurance and of course spending money.  Students usually find that they want to make the most of their time abroad and experience different things and this often includes travel, so please be aware that you will probably need extra spending money.
