The Project
Conventional electronics operates by manipulating charged particles called electrons through the application of electric fields. However the electron also possesses "spin", as if it was spinning about an axis through its centre, and behaves as a tiny magnet. By exploiting the spin degree of freedom of the electron, spintronics delivers new device function within information and communications technology. However the technologies of tomorrow must be both smaller and faster. The project combines the expertise of Prof Gang Xiao at Brown University in the fabrication of nanoscale spintronic structures with that of Prof Rob Hicken at the University of Exeter in the high frequency electrical and optical characterization of nano-devices.
