Description - summary of the module content

Module description

The module will provide you with essential skills for undertaking academic study through the medium of English. You will cover the key areas of Academic English: Listening, Writing, Reading and Speaking. This is a standalone module that may lead to your progression to higher level Academic English studies. It also forms part 1 of the Extended Foundation, the 2-term SAWE programme and may be taken by students studying the Pre-sessional English for Graduate Diploma programme. After having completed this module, you should have increased your ability in spoken and written language sufficiently to enable progression to the relevant next stage of your studies.

Module aims - intentions of the module

·        To improve the language level of students to the equivalent of CEFR Band B1

·        To enable students to progress on to their favoured progression programme.

·        To build skills in using on-line technology for independent learning

.     To build confidence in the use of English language in both an academic and social environment.

 

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

ILO: Module-specific skills

On successfully completing the module you will be able to...

  • 1. Show comprehension of spoken texts up to B1 (intermediate) level.
  • 2. Identify the main points and some detail of spoken English, which includes a focus on academic content, if it is delivered in clear standard pronunciation.
  • 3. Interact and communicate at B1 (intermediate) level
  • 4. Exchange, check and confirm meaning with reasonable fluency and appropriate detail in an extended conversation, which includes vocabulary from academic corpora.
  • 5. Show comprehension of written texts up to B1 (intermediate) level.
  • 6. Read graded, semi-authentic texts and some on general, simple academic and subject related topics extensively.
  • 7. Demonstrate a range of reading strategies that allow them to read these texts with good fluency and detailed understanding.
  • 8. Produce written work up to B1 (intermediate) level.
  • 9. Organise a range of well-structured sentences into cohesive paragraphs on a range of general and academic topics.
  • 10. Write a range of academic texts.
