Description - summary of the module content

Module description

This module will introduce you to main management theorists, tracing the development of this line of study, and applying the various theories to contemporary situations through the use of case studies.

This module is equivalent to BEA 1005. No prior knowledge of Management is assumed for this module. 

 

Module aims - intentions of the module

This module is designed to:

  • Introduce management and organisational concepts and related theories.
  • Examine the formulation and implementation of business strategy.
  • Explain the main management issues in managing people, organisational structure and culture; managing change and operations management.

  • 1. Dicuss the key role of the manager relating theory to practice.
  • 2. Identify and evaluate the consequences of a business's current objectives, market position and direction;
  • 3. Evaluate the likely consequences of strategic choices and recommend strategies to meet the objectives of a business
  • 4. Evaluate the concepts and problems of Corporate Social Responsibility and business ethics
  • 5. Discuss the concepts of organisational structure and culture and the factors that shape them
  • 6. Demonstrate knowledge of the underlying principles, processes and problems of managing people and teams
  • 7. Interpret concepts, models and practices related to motivation and leadership
  • 8. Discuss the principles, processes and problems of operations management including managing supply chains and quality programmes

Re-assessment notes

Where you have been referred/deferred for the module you will have the opportunity to take a second exam in the reassessment period. This will constitute 100% of the module, as it is impractical to impose a further group report or presentation on other members of the group who have passed. The questions set for re-assessment will ensure that all the ILOs are met.A referred exam will be capped at 40%.
