Professor Steve Smith and President Lizhong Yu
ECNU President visits the University of Exeter
On Friday 17 December 2010 the University of Exeter welcomed a senior-level delegation from East China Normal University (ECNU), headed by President Lizhong Yu.
The President’s visit included a meeting with Professor Steve Smith, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Exeter, in which the two leaders discussed the future of Higher Education in the UK and China and ways their two universities could work together in the future.
ECNU is one of Exeter’s corporate partners in China and the two institutions have a growing relationship that will be strengthened by the visit of President Yu. The purpose of the visit was to explore ways the universities could collaborate further and the visitors held discussions with the Business School, College of Social Sciences and International Studies and the College of Life and Environmental Sciences. The President’s visit concluded with a dinner hosted by Professor Steve Smith and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Neil Armstrong.
During the visit Professor Steve Smith announced four scholarships that would help ECNU students attend the University of Exeter's International Summer School. The scholarships will contribute to the cost of the all-inclusive fees on one of the five pathways that Exeter is offering for its three week programme which will commence in July 2011.
Commenting on the visit, Dr Shaun Curtis, Director of International Exeter, said "We were delighted to welcome our friends from East China Normal University to Exeter. Both institutions are committed to deepening the existing relationship and there is potential to foster further research collaboration in Education, Law, Sports Science, Business and Geography. Our project office in Shanghai will assist in taking forward these links in the New Year."
