Exeter welcomes India's National Institute of Advanced Studies

The University of Exeter was delighted to welcome Professor VS Ramamurthy, Director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) in Bangalore, and senior colleagues for a three-day visit earlier this week.

Professor Ramamurthy was joined by Professor S Settar, Professor S Ranganathan and Dr Sharada Srinivasan.

The delegation visited Exeter to participate in a series of research seminars designed to extend collaboration between the two institutions.

During their visit the delegation met with faculty from Exeter’s Department of Archaeology who already have a close working relationship with NIAS. Researchers from both universities have been working together for several years on the origins of iron and steel production in India – a project funded by UKIERI (the UK India Education and Research Initiative).

Both NIAS and the University of Exeter specialise in interdisciplinary research, especially in the Humanities. Much of the visit concentrated on forging links between disciplines. Research seminars were held with faculty from Exeter’s Department of Drama and with academic staff from the Departments of History, and Sociology and Philosophy.

Commenting on the visit Dr Shaun Curtis, Director of International Exeter, said, “We were delighted to host our colleagues from NIAS and to return the hospitality shown to us during our visits to Bangalore. With the establishment of Exeter’s Representation in Bangalore earlier this year, our staff on the ground in that city will facilitate greater faculty collaboration between our two institutions. These are exciting times as the University of Exeter’s engagement with India intensifies and we see our relationship with NIAS at the heart of that engagement.”
