Student life

The University's three campuses offer a safe and welcoming environment.  In Exeter student activities are co-ordinated by the Students' Guild, in Cornwall by FXU, for further information please see our Students' Guild/FXU webpage.

Socially, the Guild/FXU co-ordinates over 130 societies and sports clubs.  From Archaeology to Skiing, from Chocolate to Badminton, there is a club or society for everyone.  There are also a number of country based societies and an International Society with branches in both Exeter and Cornwall.  They are a great way to meet new friends and enrich your experience at Exeter.

The South West of England is a top holiday destination thanks to its mild climate and beautiful surroundings.  Transport links to London and the rest of the UK and Europe are excellent.  Exeter is a historic, safe, student-friendly city with a population of around 110,000 and a thriving arts scene.  As the regional capital, students have access to a great range of shops, restaurants and leisure facilities.  For a virtual tour of the city click here.  Our Cornwall Campus is just a short distance from the lively, waterfront town of Falmouth.  With its seven beaches, beautiful rivers and the world-famous marina, it's a haven for those who love sand, sea and surf.  You can find out much more about life in Cornwall in our 24 Ours guide.

Visa Information

The British Government in the USA has an extremely helpful website at http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/visas/ which provides clear guidlines about the process.

You will need:

  • A valid U.S passport that will not expire during your time in the UK
  • The letter of acceptance from your UK university, commonly known as the 'Offer Letter'
  • Proof of funding for at least the first year of study (this can be in the form of documentation proving scholarship funding, federal financial aid, private loans, parental bank account or whatever method you are using to fund your studies).

Financial Support

Students from the USA do not always realise that federal aid is transferable.  The University of Exeter is an institution recognised by the US Department of Education for educational loan purposes and our formal identification number is 00944200.  Information regarding US Loans is now available on the University of Exeter Student Finance webpage.

The University is also recognised by the Veterans' Association as an approved destination for study, including for the purpose of the transfer of financial aid.  For more information see the University of Exeter Student Finance webpage.

Employability

We know employability is very important to students from the USA.  We provide a Careers and Employment Service with expert advisors for international students, host a number of career fairs and company presentations, and the Students' Guild also has an office called 'The Works' which assists students in finding part time work during term time.  US students are also able to make use of 'Going Global' which is a country-specific career and employment database.  We also provide information on the post-study work scheme which allows you to stay and work in the UK for 2 years following graduation.
