VUB Summer Schools 2019


Packed with interactive seminars and study visits (EU Commission, Parliament, Council, OSCE, UN) this summer programme attracts students and young professionals who wish to broaden their knowledge of the European institutions, European law and the European decision-making process in general. 


The first week of the summer school takes place in Brussels and reviews the main EU institutions and decision-making procedures, while theoretically exploring questions of governance, participation and legitimacy. During the second week students learn more about EU foreign relations, while enjoying the beautiful city of Vienna. 


Each year, the programme has a central theme. In 2019, this summer school will focus on ‘Analysing human security in today’s EU’. While touching upon all EU policy fields, we will offer participants insights into several aspects of security, including security in its traditional sense (defense) but also from a societal perspective (migration, environment, development).


Throughout the two weeks, participants will work in small groups on an assignment related to human security. The final result will take the form of a written article, video report, podcast or infographic to be presented to their peers at the end of the summer school.

The International Summer & Winter Programs provides students with the opportunity to experience campus life at one of Canada’s top universities.

The programs combine professional development, interdisciplinary studies, and cross-cultural learning opportunities, with time for exploration, relaxation and fun.Three weeks in one of Canada’s most energetic festival cities may inspire future study and career options!

During this program, you will develop skills in:

Each of the three weeks will cover a different theme. The themes for 2018 are Canadian Studies, Entrepreneurship, and Community Engagement.

In order to be considered for the International Winter/Summer Program, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants must be registered in a full-time undergraduate program at a designated post-secondary institution.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the program start date.
  • All participants are required to sign a Release of Liability and Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement in order to participate in the program. More information about this agreement will be available at the time of registration.

Proof of English language proficiency is not required in order to be eligible for the program. However, it is highly recommended that applicants have the equivalent of 70 iBT (TOEFL) in order to be able to fully participate in all aspects of the program.

UCC’s Greek and Latin Summer School was established in 1999 in order to offer complete beginners the opportunity to acquire the skills necessary for reading original Ancient Greek or Latin texts.


The course is ideal for Masters and Doctoral students in any discipline who require knowledge of either language for their future research. However, undergraduate students, teachers and anyone over the age of 18 with an interest in Classics are also more than welcome to apply.

The ACU Commonwealth Summer School was instigated in 2011. It aims to provide a forum for high quality students from every corner of the Commonwealth to discuss multidisciplinary issues of global importance.


A key element of the School is its desire to mix local and regional students with their peers who may not have ever had the opportunity to leave their own regions.


Students in the final year of their undergraduate degree who expect to move to postgraduate study, or those already studying for a postgraduate degree (full or part time) are eligible to apply to attend. Qualifying students from ACU member institutions will be eligible to apply for bursaries.

UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program 2018

The Amgen Scholars Program provides hundreds of undergraduates each year with the opportunity to undertake
scientific research projects at many of the world's leading institutions.

Launched in 2006 in the United States, 2008 in Europe, and 2015 in Japan, Amgen Scholars has expanded to Tokyo,
Kyoto and additional world-class institutions in the U.S. and Europe.

The objective of the program is to provide undergraduate students from different countries (including some from Japan) who are committed to or who are considering a career in biology or related sciences and looking to continue to graduate studies, with eight weeks of biomedical research experience in the basic and translational sciences. Research experiences are being provided by faculty members of the Graduate School of ScienceGraduate School of EngineeringGraduate School of Pharmaceutical SciencesGraduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and the Institute of Industrial Science. By the end of their summer experience, students are expected to acquire knowledge and skills for conducting research. The students are also expected to extend their international friendship through the collaborative experiences. These experiences will help the students to develop future collaborations in many situations.

In addition to working full time in the laboratory for 8 weeks, the program features:

Explore authentic Japan in Shimane

During this 2 week program, you will have the opportunity to attend a variety of lectures focused on developing introductory Japanese Language skills and expand your understanding of Japanese culture and history from ancient times to the present. In addition to these classes, several cross cultural experiences including a tour of various landmarks, interactions with Japanese students, and a home-stay are planned.


1. Students must be currently enrolled in our partner universities / colleges (undergraduate/graduate).
2. Students who have taken a Japanese language course / class can apply for our summer school program.
3. The summer school will be held mainly in English. For students whose English is not the main language of instruction, the following level of language efficiency or its equivalence is recommended: TOEFL pbt score: 500 TOEFL ibt score: 60


An off-campus dormitory at Shimane University is provided to all participant students during the summer school program. All participants will share a dorm room with 1 other student. A shared bathroom, toilet and kitchen will be available on each floor. Students will also participate in a home-stay for two nights.

The 2018 program has 3 major changes from the program of 2017.

  • Applicants do not need to choose their course level. Japanese Teacher of CJL will place students to each level after "screening result notification" based on the score of your Japanese level check test (J-CAT test: it is different from the Self-check test) and your information of previous Japanese language study.
  • Students can select a plan for “Skill-based subject only (Credit: 1credit, Tuition fee: 65,000Yen) in 3 weeks course of Summer Course.
  • Applicants have to submit “Statement of goals and Plans for applying Short-term Japanese Program” for application.(

We do offer the second 3 week course only for summer course this year. Registration starts from January 10th, 2018.

Business and Politics in a Globalized Mexico

Programme dates:

A multidisciplinary program jointly offered by our faculties of Economics, Business Administration, Political Science and International Relations with the purpose of providing international student with a thorough understanding of Mexico, Mexico’s business opportunities and Mexico´s global economic position vs the rest of the world. 

Fully taught in English, this course consists of a three week academic module and an optional three week Spanish language module. 

All students will attend a one week common part where they will learn about Mexico’s past and present and the basis of its current position in Latin America and the global world. After this week students can choose between two options of specialized curriculum: Business and Economics or Politics and International Affairs. The first option will provide them with an informed and meaningful perspective of the Mexican economic and business environment, stressing its relevance for pursuing economic policy or business opportunities in other emerging countries. Students who choose the second option will examine the country’s current political, social and demographic situation highlighting and analyzing some of most complicated challenges it is facing today, including crime, corruption and poverty inequality. They will also study Mexico’s current international position facing the different world regions stressing the importance of a new emerging international scenario.

Students opting to stay for the second three weeks will have 4 daily hours of intensive Spanish Language at A2 or B1 levels.

Accommodation information: International Office will make accommodation arrangements individually with each student. Housing is not owned or operated by ITAM but we work closely with many residences walking distance from campus. Fully furnished residences within walking distance are approximately US$350-$450 per month depending on the students choice of residence,

Mexican Culture

The Mexican Culture program allows student to know everything there is to know about Mexico. The syllabus includes topics as music, traditions and political environment. All of our summer programs include trips that enrich the student experience and may enhance the knowledge they acquire during the regular courses. Such trips are detailed in the information for each program but they include places like Tepozotlán, Puebla and Teotihuacán.

Additionally students can consider extending their stay and make other trips to places such as: Cancún, Chiapas, Oaxaca, La Riviera Maya, Guanajuato o Baja California (such trips are planned, payed and executed by the student).

Extracurricular activities

Students can use any of our facilities and can participate in the extracurricular summer courses in areas like arts and sports with no extra cost.

Asociación Estudiantil

The "Amikoo" student association is in charge of helping our international students to adapt and get to know the Mexican lifestyle first hand. They organize trips, student activities like coffee talks and even parties. They also help with orientation sessions and even tutor students. They also help them understand how to move around and even arrange for airport pick-ups.

Confronting Climate Change - from Science to Policy
Programme Dates: 6 - 17 August 2018

The highly complex topic of climate change is the subject of our interdisciplinary bachelor summer school, “Confronting Climate Change – from Science to Policy”, which takes place in August 2018.

The course comprises of keynote lectures by high-profile scientists; workshops to train and sharpen students’ disciplinary competence and a simulation exercise of a multilateral climate conference. A field trip to the high-altitude research station on Jungfraujoch, (3500 ma.s.l.), will provide insights into the latest measurement technologies, as well as the impact of climate change. 

Special discount travel grants ( up to CHF250.-) may be available. Additionally, Bern may offer some grants of CHF250.- for course fees, on a first come first served basis.
