Pre-departure information
Do I need a Visa?
You will need to make sure your passport is valid and obtain any necessary visa/entry clearance for study in the UK. Guidance will be provided on the application form but it is the responsibility of students to check the immigration requirements that apply. More information about visas and entry clearance can be found on the International Student Support pages under Student visitor visas.
Do I need Medical Insurance?
If you are an EEA student or Swiss national you should obtain a European Health Insurance Card which will entitle you to the same access to public sector health care (e.g. a doctor, a pharmacy, a hospital or a health care centre) as nationals of the UK. You must be an EEA resident who is 'ordinarily resident' in the EEA for this to apply. The International Office will require a copy of your European Health Insurance Card before you arrive in the UK. Further information is available on the European Commission Employment, Social Affairs & Inclusion website.
If you are not from a country with a reciprocal agreement, you are not entitled to free health care under the National Health Service. Health care in the UK can be very expensive. It is a requirement of the International Summer School that you take out comprehensive medical insurance (including cover for hospitalisation and repatriation) before you leave your home country. Please check with your Embassy/High Commission whether you have a reciprocal health agreement.
