Immigration - Tier 4 Super Guide

Question 8: What qualifications do I need to show?

Your CAS Statement will clearly list the qualifications that the University/INTO has used to assess that you are qualified to study your new programme. This will usually be your highest academic qualification (such as a previous degree, or your high school results) and an English language qualification unless you are from or have completed a degree in a majority English-speaking country. You should be aware that the UK Border Agency sets different minimum levels of English for students studying at degree-level or below degree-level and the University/INTO are required to show that your English is at this particular level. This will be reflected on your CAS Statement.

For each qualification listed on your CAS, you will need to submit the following with your Tier 4 application:

  • Official original certificate or transcript (list of grades). This must confirm that you completed the qualification.
  • Translation if the original is not in English. The translation must meet the strict rules outlined below.

Translations

Any translations you submit with your application must include the following information:

  • Confirmation that it is an accurate translation of the original
  • Translator's full name and signature
  • Date of translation
  • Translator or translation company's contact details
  • Translator's qualifications (if you are applying in the UK)

ATAS

People who want to study at advanced levels within certain subject areas must obtain clearance certificates under the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS), before they make any immigration application to study, or extend their study period, in the UK. Further information about the scheme is available on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website.

Your CAS statement will state whether or not you require an ATAS certificate. This only affects certain subject areas (in particular Computer Science, Physics, Biosciences, Medicine and Engineering at Exeter) but all Masters and PhD students should check whether or not the requirement applies to them. You must apply for your ATAS certificate (via the above website) at least 4-6 weeks before you will apply for your visa. The certificate will be emailed to you and must be printed and included with your visa application. The ATAS application is undertaken entirely online and is free of charge.
