Eight-week summer scholarships for medical students to stimulate their interest in medical mycology

To increase the scientific awareness of medical students and stimulate their interest in medical mycology, we provide travel scholarships (2 per annum) to the highest calibre medical students. The successful candidates will be offered a choice of research projects and will spend 8 weeks working in the MRC Centre at Exeter or in a leading national or international Institution (covid and travel rules depending) on a medical mycology topic. This program has been trialled in other disciplines with resounding success, being transformational for these individuals, expanding their horizons and inspiring their enthusiasm for research.

All offered projects will allow the student to be involved in laboratory research, thus providing a great opportunity to gain laboratory research skills as well as exposure to study design and data interpretation. No prior expertise is necessary!

In addition, to help building future capacity in the UK clinical academic system, these scholarships will be used to promote strategic links between the MRC CMM and other major national and international centres in this field. Moreover, these students will be excellent candidates for Clinical Training Fellowships and PhD studentships in the future. The students will produce a report about their research experience and give an oral presentation at the Annual Academic Careers Evening, the centrepiece of the clinical student academic development calendar.

Eligibility

Medical students (irrespective of holding a BSc or MSc and/or intercalating) who have a free 8 week period over the summer and are clearly interested in research.

Funding

The scholarship will cover travel, accommodation and subsistence.
