EU convergence for economic transformation
Programme structure
PgCert students will complete 60 credits, PgDip 120 and MSc students 180 credits.
In addition to the four taught modules required for the PgDip (taught in the Spring and Summer terms), Masters students will also complete a 60 credit dissertation in the Summer and Autumn term.
You will be awarded a PgCert on completion of:
- Fundamentals of Environment and Human Health (30 credits)
- Ecological Public Health (30 credits)
In addition to modules completed for the PgCert, you will be awarded a PgDip on completion of the following additional modules:
- Project Design, Development and Knowledge Transfer (30 credits)
- Environmental Sciences and Sustainable Practice (30 credits)
In addition to modules completed for the PgDip, you will be awarded an MSc on completion of:
- Dissertation (60 credits)
Module descriptions
Fundamentals of Environment and Human Health
This module focuses on the theoretical principles and concepts that are at the forefront of academic thinking and practice in environment and human health. Upon completion, you will be able to critically review contemporary evidence and current debates, and examine how these can be applied effectively to your area of practice.
The syllabus for this module includes the following key areas:
- Introduction to environment, health and sustainable development
- Human frontiers, environment and health
- Key environment and human health policies
- Current debates in environment and human health
- Defining and measuring health and well-being
- Biodiversity, climate change and resilience
- Introduction to environmental epidemiology
- Case studies in environment and human health
- Personal learning skills audit
Ecological Public Health
This module provides a broad overview of ecological public health and the importance of "place", drawing on examples from the UK and elsewhere. The range of current practice and underpinning concepts such as health inequality are explored. Upon completion you will be able to examine theories and concepts of the environmental and social determinants of health and health inequalities; understand the ecology of population health; and review and analyse policy and practice relating to systems of healthcare and the potential for community health improvement.
The syllabus for this module includes the following key areas:
- Ecology of health and illness; place, culture, gender, health beliefs, poverty and social exclusion
- Current challenges to health and wellbeing
- Social and environmental determinants of health; work, housing, rural health
- Health inequalities, equity and ethics
- Partnership working; health, social care, local authority, private/voluntary sector and community collaboration
- Health policy and practice; the NHS and other healthcare systems
- Community health: involvement, development, empowerment
- Health across the lifespan: children, adult and later life, chronic disease
Project Design, Development and Knowledge Transfer
This module provides the knowledge and skills associated with the project design, development and knowledge transfer process. In addition to business planning and project management skills, you will gain practical experience of multi-disciplinary team working through problem identification and problem solving, developing your use of innovation and creativity in project design, development and knowledge transfer.
The syllabus for this module includes the following key areas:
- Personal skills audit
- Question generation and problem identification
- Systematic evaluation and needs assessment
- Investigative methodologies
- Project and resource management
- Entrepreneurship and social enterprise
- Knowledge transfer process
- How to write a business plan/project proposal
- Presentation skills
- Giving and responding to feedback
Environmental Sciences and Sustainable Practice
This module covers aspects of environmental science with specific relevance to human health, and delivers critical knowledge and skills in environmental science and sustainable practice.
The syllabus for this module includes the following key areas:
- Key concerns in environment and health
- Environmental remediation
- Concepts in environmental resource measurement, management and control
- Media pollution (air, water, land) and risks to human and environmental health
- Environmental science - policy links
- Geographies of environment and health: GIS as a key method and tool
- Ecosystem services and human health and wellbeing
- Horizon scanning for emergent themes in environment and human health
Dissertation
During your dissertation, you will produce a project of your choosing under supervision which showcases the skills you will have developed in project design, development, evaluation and synthesis. Dissertation topics, developed in conjunction with researchers and partners at the European Centre, can include a research project, pilot study, development of an intervention, website or new product.
