Public Engagement Day - Saturday 31st March 2012

Arranged with the Exeter Lived Experience Group (LEG), this day will launch the Centre to the wider public with a focus on increasing public awareness of psychological approaches for depression and reducing stigma for mood disorders.

The event will be hosted at the new Sir Henry Wellcome Building for Mood Disorders (behind the Washington Singer Building on the University's Streatham Campus) from 10:00 - 17:00.  Visitors are welcome to attend for all or any part of the day.

10:20-10:50 Recovery Presentations Members of the LEG will talk about their depression and different methods of recovery
10:50-11:10 Lived Experience of Therapy Members of the LEG talk about the different therapies offered in the Mood Disorders Centre and AccEPT Clinic and how they have helped the members to live with depression 
11:10-11:40 Ask the professionals - what help is available A panel of professionals (GP, Psychiatrist, CPN, Therapist, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner) discussing what role each professional plays in treating mood disorders/depression.  We encourage you to ask questions and engage in the debate.
11:40-12:00 Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) MBCT is used for reducing the impact and onset of depression, but it is also great for reducing stress.  This session will provide you with some helpful MBCT activities you can use everyday.
12:00-12:10 Charity presentation There are a number of great charities that focus on mood disorders - this session will be presented by a different charity each time and will provide information on what they do and what help is available.
12:25-12:45 Behavioural Activation (BA) exercise BA is a therapy used to help people with mood disorders to link their behaviour (exercise, interaction with others, etc) with how their mood fluctuates.  Learn some helpful BA activities you can use everyday.
12:45-13:05 Gwyneth Lewis Gwyneth Lewis, poet and writer, will read some of her works dealing with mental health

13:15-13:35 Carer's perspective  Presentation and discussion about experiences from a carer perspective.

Car parking

Car parking on the Streatham Campus will be free of charge, however there are limited spaces available.  The D Bus runs from high street to the campus regularly.
