Funding
Funding for musical activities comes from two sources: the University and the Students' Guild. See the following sections for information on eligibility and how to apply.
University funding
The University offers £12,000 funding per academic year for enhancing University Music Activities. This money is administered through the Music Office. Applications will be considered from any group or individual wishing to put on a music event, not limited to Guild or ExTunes Societies or groups. Applications are made half way through each term, but please check with the Music Office for details of application deadlines.
The grants are for the enhancement of Music in the University and are independent from Guild funding - the Guild may not reduce Guild Society money on the grounds that the University money can be substituted for this. Anything that improves the quality of music-making at the university, improves access, or raises the profile of it (including good publicity materials) can be considered. Capital expenditure will also be considered to the value of 75% of the item applied for.
The University grants cannot be used for paying regular external ensemble directors, although occasional specialist workshop coaches can be considered. Nor can the University support travel /subsistance costs for tours except in the case of transport/hire of instruments. However, both of these areas can be supported by the Students Guild.
For ease of accounting, Music Office grant money is usually administered through the Guild Finance Office - your claim must be counter-signed by someone in the Music Office before you present it for reimbursement. If you are not a Guild Society, then please discuss how the money can be reclaimed with the Music Office directly.
If you would like to apply for funding through the Music Office, please read the Student Funding Application Guidelines first before completing the Student Funding Application Form. Please speak to Music Office staff for more information about the University Music Fund on 01392 723042.
Guild funding
The Students' Guild offers funding to fully constituted Guild Societies, based partly on the number of members of the Society.
The Guild do not consider capital expenditure, instruments, gear, or music purchase, although they will consider music hire. They also have a low limit on publicity materials. Both of these areas can be considered by the University Music Fund.
Guild Societies all hold two accounts. One is for income generated - like subs and ticket money - which can be spent as the society wishes; the other is for the Guild grant which has some restrictions - e.g. the money cannot be spent on purely social events.
More details are available from the Guild at the beginning of each term.
There is money out there, so do apply for it! Good luck!
